In this scene from my novel Shattered Glass Milo's unreasonable jealousy fed by drummer Bart Hedge led to an argument with Liam. What follows is Milo's apology and Liam's reaction.

“Milo, we’ve had this discussion before. He’s no longer jailbait. What’s wrong with being with
the guy you love?”

“Everyone will know. It wouldn’t be good for the band.”

“Milo, Elton John is openly gay and it hasn’t affected his record sales. For Christ’s sake, he
does work for Disney. It’s not the band, Milo, it’s you. You have been fighting what you are for years
for no good reason. Your true friends already know. The roadies know. There are always rumors in the
media. Liam is obviously gay. We spent years trying to tone it down because of where we were raised,
but we’re not there anymore. The entertainment industry is a big tent, and no one is going to throw you
out because you and Liam are lovers. This is your macho bullshit talking.”

“He says I put him on a shelf and just take him out to perform or fuck and then I lock him away
again.”

“Do you? Ask yourself that question and answer it honestly for a change.”

“I don’t know.” Milo checked the door to make sure he was still alone.

“Milo, have you ever taken him out dancing? Do you go to dinner, or a movie?”

“I haven’t got a lot of time with the band—”

“Cut the crap. I played in and managed that band for years, and yet I had time to finish law
school. I only asked for a break to study for the bar. I passed the bar three years ago, opened the firm,
and yet even though Shattered Glass is one of my most important clients, you won’t let me do my job.

You insist on handling everything yourself. What the fuck are you really hiding from?”
“I think I’m afraid to lose him. He’s still so young. I’m scared he’s going to go out and find
someone else.”

“If you keep pushing him away, it will only happen faster. Fuck, you need to get the hell out of
the closet. Your father’s dead, he can’t do you any damage. If you still have issues with that, see a
counselor. You need to do something or you will push everything and everyone you love so far away
from you that you’ll never get them back.”

“I’ll think about it.”

“You better do more than think.”

Milo sat in the study and stared at the wall. Was Sam right, could it be him? But Bart had toured
with a few other bands and knew how much all of this took out of a man. He said Liam just didn’t
understand how much it took to keep it all together. Milo didn’t know, and his ignorance of his own
feelings had caused a rift between not only himself and Liam, but between him, Sam and Rick. He
wished it could be simple. All he wanted to do was love and take care of his baby in peace.
Milo went back upstairs to the bedroom. Liam lay on his stomach, with the cats sleeping on the
pillow above his head. Milo looked at him longingly. He had to stop running from his heart. He crossed
the bare wood floor and sat on the edge of the bed. He was determined to make it up to him somehow.
Lifting the covers, he slid in beside him.

“Baby,” he whispered as he began to stroke his back. “Baby, I need to talk to you.”

“You’re here. I dreamed that you left.”

“No, love, I’m right here beside you. Come into my arms, and let me love you.”

“You’re not mad at me anymore?”

“No, I’m mad at myself for being an unreasonable, jealous prick.”

Liam rolled over on his side and the sheet slipped down below his waist. Milo kept stroking his
skin.

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” Liam said. “I swear. I just needed to talk to someone. I know you
need to run the band. I don’t want to be another burden. I’m so lonely sometimes. Danny’s just a friend.
He’s as het as you can get. I didn’t want to spend the evening feeling sorry for myself.”

“You’re right. I haven’t been putting the time into our relationship that you deserve. I have been
taking you for granted. I promise, I’ll try and do better. You are still so young. The thought of you
finding someone else makes me crazy.”

“I keep telling you, you are it for me. There will never, ever, be anyone else. If you believe
nothing else I tell you, believe that.”

“I’ll try, baby.”

Milo’s hands moved down Liam’s torso, stroking him into arousal. He tried to be as gentle this
morning as he was rough the previous evening. He worshipped Liam’s body with his mouth, moving
down his chest to his now blatant erection.

Placing kisses on Liam’s long, slender shaft, he wrapped his mouth around the mushroomed
head and began to suck with a soft motion that caressed his lover’s organ in his warm mouth. He
fondled Liam’s balls, licked, and sucked around the head, deliberately avoiding his lover’s ass because
he thought Liam would still be sore from his rough treatment of last night.

Liam moaned, “Please, love, more.”

Milo worried at the tip of Liam’s erection with his teeth, building up the tension gradually,
making his lover feel every swipe of his mouth and tongue.

“Milo, I’m gonna—”

Liam spurted into Milo’s mouth. Milo swallowed all his lover had to give him.

"Come up here, love,” Liam begged. “I want to make you feel good, too.”

“No, baby, this time was just for you. Let’s get a shower and go out for breakfast. Then we can
shop for a bench for the garden. I haven’t spent any time there either, and I want to watch you play the
guitar as I tend the flowers. I want to do so many things, baby, but I only want to do them with you.”

Today I noticed that I have 1,647 comments on my blogs, the great majority of them compliments on my writing. My blogging activity is dependent upon the sale of my books which cover the same subjects in fiction that the blogs cover in fact. So here it comes, the sales pitch.

Shattered Glass – Lyrics

I started to write Shattered Glass for NANOWRIMO in November of 2008. For those of you who are unfamiliar with NANOWRIMO it stands for National Novel Writing Month and it is held every November. The object of the contest is to write a fifty-thousand word novel within the month of November. Winners are simply those who finish the task. Shattered Glass eventually became over ninety-thousand words, but the basic book started small, before extensive revisions at fifty-thousand for NANOWRIMO.

Initially, I had structured the as a series of flashbacks, but that didn’t work. After several attempts ending in failure, to shore-up that approach, I was advised by my stalwart Beta Reader, Crossthebar, to put it in chronological order. This worked well and with the exception of a single event, all of the novel’s action now takes place in sequence.

I realized soon after beginning the novel that since Shattered Glass was a band, the band needed songs, or, at the very least lyrics. After a bit of soul-searching, I decided to write the lyrics myself. As portrayed in the novel, Milo and Liam wrote music together with Liam as the composer and Milo as the lyricist. While separated from Liam, Milo wrote a book of poetry entitled Words Without Music. Liam wrote songs for two solo albums. All of the lyrics I wrote for the book are credited to Milo’s book, Liam’s albums or the albums that Shattered Glass recorded prior to the breakup. Here are some sample lyrics. Sam Stein, attorney and owner of Stein Talent Ltd,

looked around his suite at the Plaza. Half of his personnel came over from his office on East 73^rd to handle the crisis. A press conference scheduled for four p.m. put the media in a feeding frenzy. Rumor and speculation ran thick and heavy for ten days. Sam took the statements of the three remaining members of the group Shattered Glass now sequestered in adjoining suites. The fourth went AWOL. None of the

band saw or heard from Liam O’Shea in ten days. Rumors circulated, but even his best investigator, J.B. Saunders, hadn’t a clue.

He yelled over to his assistant, “Margot, has J.B. filed a report on Liam?”

“Not yet, I’m working on it. You have ten minutes to get downstairs.”

Sam picked up his statement and headed out of the suite to the press room. None of the principals would say much more than

the basic facts. Bart made a pass at Milo, and Liam walked.

Sam begged Milo Stamis, group leader and Sam’s best friend, to tell him what happened.

Milo exploded in an angry tirade against Liam. “If I could find the little bastard, I’d choke him. He’s been carrying on with that fucking roadie, Danny, behind my back for years. Bart kept trying to warn me and I wouldn’t listen. Leave it alone, Sam. I’ve called everywhere to try to locate him. He’s probably sunning himself with his new lover somewhere in the Caribbean. Fuck if I care.”

Sam shook his head, “I wouldn’t believe Bart Hedge if he told me the sky was blue.”

“Damn it, you hired the bastard. If you’d stayed with the band, on the drums where you belonged, this wouldn’t have happened. Now get the hell out of my room.”

Sam left thinking that the dark circles under Milo’s red eyes told more of the story than his temper.

Sam’s brother, Rick, the bass guitarist, didn’t help. He told Sam, “Bart sidled up to Milo during rehearsal the day after Milo threw Liam out of the house. Liam hauled off and punched Bart and gave him a black eye. I went to the back to check the drums, so I didn’t see it happen. Anyway, what the fuck do I know? I get little respect and less information.” Rick shrugged with assumed indifference.

Bart, who to Sam stood out as the root of the whole fiasco, gave him a terse, “No comment.” After some coaxing on Sam’s part, he would only say Milo kicked him out of the band and that he refused to finish the tour even if asked back.

The guys were better off without that sleazy bastard, anyway. I’ll have to talk Milo into keeping Bart for the remainder of the tour. After that, Bart’s a goner. He’s replaceable. Liam is not. How could I have missed all of the tension of the last few years?

That’s easy, his conscience replied. You let the band slide because you let your business consume you. But Milo refused to go near Bart, so Sam would be forced to assume his former role and play in the band to finish the tour.

As for Liam, none of the band or the crew laid eyes on either him or Danny Hobbs, the roadie in question, for over ten days.

When he arrived downstairs, networks, cable news, all the legitimate music magazines, newspapers, and stringers from every supermarket rag that ran covers of alien invasions and three-headed cows packed the Plaza’s press room, all of them ready to take a bite out of Sam’s hide.

Margot preceded him through the door and announced his entrance. The room burst into a cacophony of voices all shouting questions he could not or would not be able to answer.

Sam began to sweat in his Armani suit, but soldiered on to the podium. He faced the crowd as they settled into an expectant silence.

“Good afternoon. I have a prepared statement and will take no questions afterward. Liam O’Shea, Shattered Glass’ composer, lead guitarist and singer, has left the band due to creative differences. Milo Stamis informed me today that Liam will be replaced for rest of the tour by solo artist, Johnny Borchoi, who graciously agreed to interrupt his sabbatical to fill in for Liam.”

The media exploded in protest as Sam prepared to leave the podium. Margot whispered, “Sam, you need to answer a few questions or they’ll bombard the office. We won’t be able to work.”

Looking over the rabble, Sam agreed with Margot’s assessment. He returned to the podium and braced himself for what he knew would come.

“I will take a few questions.”

Hands flew into the air. Sam pointed at random. The reporter jumped up.

“Rolling Stone. Mr. Stein, didn’t you once play the drums for Shattered Glass, and isn’t bass guitarist Rick Stein your brother?”

“Yes. Next question, over there in the corner.”

“Billboard. There are rumors of an altercation at a rehearsal. It’s said that Liam attacked Bart Hedge?”

“No comment. Second row, third from the left.”

“Joe Menendez, Entertainment Tonight. Doesn’t Liam owe his fans an explanation?”

“Liam’s music speaks for itself,” Sam growled. “I’ll take one last question.”

A stringer for one of the grocery rags stood up and shouted a question that silenced the room. ”Sam, were Milo and Liam lovers?”

“No comment.” Sam abruptly left the podium and disappeared behind the curtain, heading to the private exit.

Their public relations representative pulled Sam aside as he attempted to exit the room.

“Come on, Sam. At least tell me the truth off the record. Are Milo and Liam lovers? Rumors abound of a blowup at the rehearsal, and a physical altercation.”

“No comment.”

The PR rep left. Sam stood, shoulders slumped. He shook his head. The truth was more complicated than anyone could imagine.

Should I fail you, what happens to me after will not matter very much, because I will not love again.

“As for fidelity, no O’Shea has ever betrayed their fated mate once they met. Even if their destined love belonged to another whom they refused to leave, an O’Shea would be faithful to them until death and beyond. My own mother, widowed while she was still a young woman of thirty-two, never looked at another man. Infidelity is not in our make-up. I thought it would be different for me. As a Murphy and my father’s son, I did not expect to inherit as much of the O’Shea as I did. Yet, some of the traits showed themselves as soon as my father passed. Even so, as a gay man, I did not look for or expect to find the one love. Nevertheless, yesterday, when I first laid eyes on you, Sir, it struck.

“I will never willingly leave you, Sir. Another’s touch would be as abhorrent to me as it was to my mother. I cannot guarantee no one will touch me from this day forward. Even so, I can swear the only way someone would touch me would be by force, and if I were physically overtaken and I would fight back, Sir. I would never willingly succumb. I am not asking you to lower your standards for my sake. I want you to know I would never betray you by choice.”

In slow degrees, the tow-headed boy woke on the hard floor. A faint moan, an eyelid twitch, a soft flutter of pale lashes, and then a blue eye opened face-to-antenna with a cockroach. The Sears Toughskin jeans he opened as his birthday gift two days ago felt wet around the crotch and smelled of both urine and feces. His new plaid shirt with the pearl cowboy buttons was torn and bloody. He swallowed hard, past the dry lump the size of a baseball stuck in the back of his throat. He opened his left eye, the one nearest to the bug. It looked as if his bone stuck out of his shirt, a handhold under his elbow; the right arm bent at an unnatural angle just below the tear.

It took a few additional seconds for the pain to hit, long enough for him to realize he did not know how he got here or why. Then, it struck, shock abated.

He hurt, bad. Even so, he knew enough not to cry out. He heard Mama pounding on the door of the bathroom and Aunt Mary in the distance, along with the whine of sirens. Then the pain took him away, and he rode it back to safety.

The times we should not...

I can see why some people are so violently opposed to stem cell research; but not for the reasons they claim. Stem cell research will not kill any babies. Those who want to have an abortion will get an abortion. The stem cell

s of those children coud save the loves of countless other children and adults. Medical breakthroughs are possible in the areas of inherited diseases, genetic pre-disposition to cancer, auto-immune disorders, heart and lung problems, the list could be endless. Imagine Johnny, home from Iraq, where a firebomb took his leg and with stem cells, in a few weeks or months, Johnny could be whole again. Many of these potential diseases lurk in the geome and only cause their chaos in combination. There is more to genetic theory in this new milineum than existed for Gregor Mendel and his wrinkled peas.

Genetic combinations may cause particular behaviors, ie.: aggression, bi-polar disorder, depression, a tendency to become a sociopath, the areas of investigation are so new, the science is so young, we do not know where it will lead.

However, in my time on this earth I have noticed something. Generally speaking, by my observation, most of nature statistically falls into a standard bell curve.

Most any human endeavor can be represented on the curve, test scores, percentage of population with certain genetic markets, almost anything canbe charted. The normal is represented by the line in the middle of the bell and encompasses the lines to the left and right.

The further to the left you go, usually means the lower the score, higher amount of defect, further from the ideal. The right side of the bell represents the ideal - perfection.

I have already mentioned that genes can have many functions in combination with each other. They also can change function with the addition of RNA or another protein.

Science has not mapped out the chain reaction of every protien to every gene nor every gene to every form of RNA. This leaves us with the dilemma of good intentions.

Where is the line drawn between the "good" use of genetic manipulation and the horrific use of same. Unfortunately, the Sarrans found the answer long before the Plague hit their planet. A genetic manipulation meant to create beauty, great strength and intelligence levels for all children in the upper 4.5% of the Bell Curve seemed to have succeeded over two generations. It was in the third generation that the change became noticeable. The number of femspring born decrease by apupproximately 10% the first year. The mutated gene rippled through the population until it affected the entire gene pool. By the third generation there were 30% less femspring born than offspring, clans began to lock up the fems. By the fifth generation the fem population was 60% less than it had been before the new gene infected the pool. Thus began the Clan Wars. You could say that it was too much of a good thing, or you could quote Aldous Huxley as I did above.

AC: You seem to be very possessive of Tonas and now, Anya, does that stem from childhood?

Jonal: Yes and no, AC. It stems from two sources. The first was my uncertainty over the strength of our Pair Bond. After the initial BondStir, Tonas held out longer than what most Sarrans before his acceptance. Since he never had given a reason, I could only assume he was holding out for someone else. I thought I knew who that was and it caused me great pain.

The second reason I am so possessive is because of what I lost in the attack of the Iptz Ship. Hannitz cost me my mother and my femsib Aelion. As the Head of FireClan, my mother and her mates knew the names of every warrior, femspring and offspring who claimed FireClan through their Bonds. If they lived at Rohastes Castle, I knew their faces, went to academy with their brothers and sons, shared natal days and feast days.

I came home to no-one. My femsib's Warriors, held her while she was taken to the goddess. She hadn't stopped screaming for days. Excuse me, this is difficult...Despite the chaos, we managed to place her before the goddess.; Tonas, myself and her Warriors. As soon as the pyre was lit, my femsibs BondedPair jumped into the fire and perished with her remains. I was barely able to speak after that incident, until Tonas and I heard Anya on the Brightstar. So, AC, if I am jealous, it is because I feel a great need to hold on tight to what is mine, least I lose it, yet again.

AC: You feel things very deeply, does Tonas?

Jonal: Tonas does not show his emotions to strangers. It was traditional for LightClan Princes to judge minor disputes between clansmen. The LightPrinces were trained from birth not to let their feelings show. On a world where the humanoid populaton has developed psi to a high degree, strong shields are fixed in place by your Triad until you are old enough to shield yourself. The Clans have developed the reading of facial expressions and body language to a fine art. Tonas's Elders believed that it was better to keep a blank visage than to give away the thoughts you worked so diligently to shield from view.

AC: Then Tonas's upbringing was quite different from yours?

Jonal: In FireClan, a Warrior used every weapon at his disposal. That included facial expressions used to intimidate, to solicit and the full range of your vocal capacity.

AC: You were loud and boisterous, and Tonas was raised to be quiet and reflective.

Jonal: That is why were melded so perfectly. Duty calls, Ms. Katt.

AC: Thank you for the time you were able to give us, Jonal.

Anya Goes AWOL

In this excerpt, Anya is bored and decides to explore the ship. Naturally, she runs right into trouble in the form of Flagen, a rejected suitor of Tonas, who hates Jonal and wants what Jonal has for his own.

Anya had free rein of the ship and she wanted to explore. Jonal and Tonas were in conference in the StarRoom, Tigger was AWOL, and the only other person she knew on board, Mark, was in there with them. It was time to boldly go where blah blah. An apt metaphor, she thought. The fleet ships were refitted with universal signs adapted from commons Earth usage. Unused to free time and having little responsibility, she studied the symbols. Assured she could find her way around without a problem, Anya left the Quarters. As the command Star Cruiser of the both the Galactic and Sarran fleet, Brightstar was the size of a micropolitan city of 50,000, stuffed into two square miles of sardine can. The corridors reeked of art deco canoodling one of the French Louies, ornate and pre-fabbed. As Anya roamed, men gawked, but none approached her until she hit a corridor near the mess hall.

She had presumed that the mess was quiet this time of day, just after breakfast but not quite time for lunch. She knew she was close by when a whiff of fresh brewed Jamaican Blue Mountain titillated her nose. A quick reverse to backtrack engaged Anya in a near on collision with a Sarran male. She pushed up against the sidewall to stabilize her position, leaving handprints on the calendared crenellations. Looking up, she targeted a face, and that triggered a connection. “Hey,” she called, “Aren't you Mark's Bane?”

“No, I'm Flagen,” he retorted, “I belong to no Warrior. I’m Bane's brother, his twin.” If anger were solar flares, his eyes shot power outages. She stepped back. Flagen’s lips distorted into a perversion of a smile and he herded her toward the java scent, riding her heel. Anya wasn't cowed, but could distinguish between retreat and surrender. She chose the former and crooked her back to avoid contact with his shoulder. For an instant, Anya took solace in the surety that her mates were but a focus away.

“Where are you taking me?” Anya demanded.

“You wanted coffee.” He challenged, "That is one aroma that every Earthen I've seen can follow straight to source. Without it you all have the look of a stomped bronc in a hails-out.”

They entered a hall and Anya froze and gaped. She had seen pictures old automats but this was a Horn and Hardart on steroids. Disks heaped with obscure vegetation and Sarran viands, sat amid Mickey D's, shrimp etouffee and egg foo yung, each encased in cubicles of gold and glass. It appeared the Washington sycophants had donated sundry take out menus and a dated set of Time-Life cookbooks to re-assemble Earthen cuisine for the women. The result was a mishmash of the freaky and the mundane, combinations guaranteed to be barfers. She snickered and wondered what Stern's comments were on bureaucratic creativity.

“Really,” She cocked her head. “With this selection, coffee's the only sane alternative.” I must remember to speak to the boys, she thought. She cased the hall spying a spigot attached to a massive urn that appeared broad and rowdy enough to encase industrial waste, it looked about right. "This is the coffee?" she noted with Flagen still on her heels. She grabbed a large size tumbler of heatproof plasticine and pulled the lever. Levers seemed to transcend culture. Basic humanoid mechanics endured, a snuggly thought. She looked to the left, Hello little pink packets, and cream. She quickly prepared a cup and sipped.

Flagen's face morphed from impersonation of a serial killer to merely grim. “Your face is incandescent. This coffee, is a drug?"

“Some believe it is. I prefer the word nectar myself.” Anya laughed, “Stomped bronc, huh, present company included?”

“That requires some consideration. Do you go out in a hails-out sans a slicker or gear?”

He actually cracked a smile. “I've been known to channel a submersed rat, or two.”

“Is that a drowned rat or a ‘You dirty, rat?’ My translator does not pick up the elegance of your slang.”

“But mine picks up the sting of your bite, or perhaps the goad of your prick.” Anya countered. “Do you shroud all your enmity in wit?”

“Enmity? Why would you say that?”

“You seem to bristle at all things Earthen.”

“Maybe it's but a penchant for things Sarran.”

“Maybe,” she conceded. “What was it like?”

“Mountains, valleys, desert, much like your Earth; but clean. Our sins against our cradle, long passed. Tierest trees, brumble bush.” Flagen stopped. Anya watched him take a breath, “Paradise, home, as one of your poets cried, Nevermore.” He shifted his eyes from her sight.

Anya impulsively reached for his hand, patted it awkwardly then withdrew. “Yesterday is always Nevermore, Flagen.”

He scrutinized her face and seemed to discover a fabled swan rather than the troll he anticipated. “You Bond the Prince of Light, little ember?” Flagen asked in an eerily tender tone.

“He and Jonal, when the deed is ever done,” Anya replied in honesty.

“Do you have distaste, for the LightClan Prince?”

“No,” she asserted. "He's magnificent, both gentle and kind. I'm in love with the galoot, and Jonal is ..."

"Jonal is Jonal," Flagen finished her sentence for her, although Anya wasn't sure that his interpretation resembled hers. “Maybe I will taste this coffee of yours while you tend to your second helping.” Flagen’s face was preternatural. His meter had jumped from violation to free game score faster than light speed. He was volatile and it turned her shaky. Flagen did mood alterations as often as starlets did body mods and with as little purpose. It was time for a graceful and quick exit line. She looked around for a fast and dirty excuse and seized on...deliverance.

“Mark, over here. I've just met your...brother-in-law?” Anya reached for the right term.

“Flagen.” Mark said his name with such crack and sizzle that Anya had to check for steam with his spit. Mark had not wowed the in-laws.

“We were discussing Sarran and ca... co.. coffee.” Darn, she hated when she stuttered and Mark knew she only did it when her nerves were fried.

“I believe your Bonded are calling security.” Mark gently took her arm and eased her away from Flagen.

“Security? What is it with these guys? Jesus, Mary and Joseph, haven't you told them that on Earth we had a women's movement. Sensitivity training is in order, and they need classes on gender issues. Geez Mark, can't I ever get out of there?” Anya grumbled. “Most likely the cat threw up again. They keep on feeding him strange stuff.” She sighed once more, for effect, and scrambled to the corridor. I am sooooooo gone, out out out. Though I might have overplayed that one a tiny bit. She made her way back to Quarters.

Mark watched Anya scurry through the arched entrance. It looked as if that nice little tail had been a bit singed. He decided to go back and find out what had yanked Flagen’s chain this time. “Slumming, Flagen? Xenophobia in lock down?” Mark's eyebrow rose in a suggestion of derision.

Flagen gave a classic Gallic shrug. Mark marveled at the interchangeable body language exhibited by both Sarran and Earthen. He was sure research would someday prove a commons genetic source. He scowled at his brother-in-Bond, permitting his fury to manifest on his face. “If this is a jealous tantrum, you are engaged in a duel without a saber. Alligators look indolent in the sun, but they have teeth. They don't eat often, but when they do, they swallow you whole.”

THE SARRAN PLAGUE was very interesting, and very well written. The story was enthralling from the very first page, and you could really feel the love and devotion between Tonas, Jonal, and Anya. Ms. Katt has created a very convincing alternate universe, and has done an excellent job of painting a picture for the reader. All in all, this was a very good book, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Anya learns this is not unusual n the planet Sarran where the standard marriage is what they call a Triad, the union of two men with one woman!

To the sexual complications is added a small group of traitors who seek to destroy the mission by having the alien source of the plague, the Zyptz, attack the ship and kill all onboard. The Zyptz are uglier than the Sarrans are magnificently attractive, and I’m sure you will laugh when near the end of the story you learn what they resemble from planet Earth.

I found this to be a fun read. The author writes well and has a style that keeps the action flowing to the ending…

The Sarran Plague begins on a night when Americans are celebrating the 4th of July. Looking up into the sky, “Celebrants spotted a magnificent explosion in the upper atmosphere. They looked up at the fiery disk. It was a show-stopping display. Everyone agreed that green mist was an apropos finale, until, that is, they noticed it became a slimy oil-like substance on their skin.

Breaking news headlines streamed across CNN. Banners shrieked from print. Talk shows spoke slime 24/7. Environmental groups expressed outrage. The EPA investigated, and Congress planned hearings. The executive branch had no comment.”

So begins a very creative mix of SciFi and an erotic bodice buster. One group of aliens have spread a plague upon the Earth that could kill all the women. Another group of aliens have already seen their women killed by the plague but have discovered an antidote and are willing to offer the antidote to the governments of Earth, provided they are allowed to take some Earth women back to their planet in order to save life on their planet.

The deal is made and the story follows one of the women who has been given in trade. I found this to be a fun read. The author writes well and has a style that keeps the action flowing to the ending. The prudish would probably be offended by the explicit sex scenes that involve male to male love, as well as two men making love with one woman. But looking at it from the point of view of the Sarrans (and as Anya comes to see it), the human body and the soul within that body, is a beautiful thing worthy of being loved.

In Honor of Earth Day

A civilization that survived on their home planet for untold numbers of cycles has three things that many other failed inhabited worlds lacked. The first is sheer luck. The Sarran home world is located well away from the center of the Milky Way Galaxy on one of the less populated spiral arms.

The placement of Sarran's star system put the planet out of the main traffic lanes for planet eating asteroids, climate altering meteors and visits from further developed war like civilizations that may have existed before the Sarrans but did not survive their own aggression. Absurdly, the Sarran's long lived civilization depended on the same mantra that every Earthen Real Estate Salesperson is given with their license, "Location, location, location."

The second part of the survival triad is a planetwide civilization that began to cooperate early on issues that affected their home environment. The third is simply to learn from their mistakes rather than to persist in repeating them. In the earliest times there were major environmental disasters with fossil fuel and the unsafe use of nuclear fission. Once the Sarran Clans became aware of the environmental damage created by using fossil fuel, the ruling council incorporated the research results brought to them by the brilliant scientist Tezacron, Prince of AirClan, and incorporated his findings into Sarran Common Law long before the Codex. Fossil Fuel consumption was slashed by a quarter, planet wide each cycle thus encouraging the discovery of an alternative. Manufacturing Facilities that released nuculear waste into the ecosystem were closed immediately and soon replaced by others that ran on cold fusion.

The Sarrans knew from the start that their planet was the only thing that stood between their civilization and the great void. Watching others slip into the morass of greed at the expense of a healthy environment that produced healthy inhabitants; the Sarrans did the unusual. They learned from the history of others rather than go their own way and repeat a long line of environmental catastrophe that would result in the downfall of the entire humanoid population of the sphere.

The one time the Sarrans forgot this cardinal rule sowed the seeds of their future dilemma and brought the planetwide civilization to its knees in the ClanWars. The result of that scientific catastrophe -- even though a solution was sought and found, made the Sarrans vulnerable in a way that they did not anticipate during the Zyptz Wars.

WIP - Shattered Glass

The Inspiration for my WIP, Shattered Glass was this Jon Bon Jovi Song. However, unlike the video below, I listened to the lyrics and fashioned my story around what was said and implied. A lyricist and his collaborating musician get together after a separation. The video implies some kind of disagreement. In Shattered Glass, I made the disagreement into a lover's quarrel of epic proportions caused by the lies and manipulations of a third party. Here is the video. Make a Memory:

I pictured Milo to look like Jon Bon Jovi. Of course he can't. So here are pictures of my imaginings:

Liam O'Shea, carefree youth with a smile that brought the sun turned into troubled adult, still in love with the man who betrayed him.

On your right is Milo Stamis, the Leader of the Band and once, the guardian and the lover of Liam. In the beginning of the novel he waits for Liam to arrive fretting about what he thinks happened and wondering if that is what actually happened.

Milo still loves Liam and would do anything to get him back. The road back to love, however is full of potholes, danger, intrigue. Someone plotted against the lovers and the band. Now, Liam is being stalked and someone wants him dead.

Once it becomes clear that Liam has visited Milo, the stalker becomes enraged and goes after both of them.

I hope you like this synopsis of Shattered Glass. I look forward to presenting it to you when it is finished.

I am deeply upset and worried about the alarming trend in Australia, a supposed Western Type Democracy that is about to engage in China like censorship of the Internet. I was directed to an article in the Australian Sunday Morning Herald by a fellow member of the Erotic Author's Association. The anonymous Whistleblower site, Wickileaks published a leaked copy of the "secret Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) blacklist of prohibited websites, which forms the backbone of the Government's censorship policy."

The article went on to say that, "Far from containing just "illegal material" such as child pornography, the list of prohibited websites includes a wealth of legal material such as regular gay and straight porn sites, YouTube links, online poker sites, Wikipedia entries, euthanasia sites and even the sites of a Queensland dentist, a school canteen consultancy and an animal carer.

The Government's mandatory internet censorship plan, which is already being trialled by a number of small ISPs, will block sites contained on the ACMA blacklist for all Australians."

It does seem that some of the Aussies are fighting back. iiNet, Australia's third largest internet provider has refused to take part in the trials.

Why does this worry me? I don't live in the land down under and no one is trying to censor my internet --yet. The problem is quite simple. Once censorship becomes acceptable in one Western Democracy, the radical right can point at that government as a shining example of a country doing what is "right and proper" according to, of course, the far right.

Of course I am predjudiced, I write Erotic Romance for a living and my novels contain menage a trois, and some homosexual themes. I say this with reluctance because I believe that there is no such thing as a gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or heterosexual "theme" in an erotic romance. All of the themes are about the same thing, love in all of its forms and expressions. The idea that any government can come out and censor the internet's sexual content because it wishes to stop the spread of "child ponography" is imbecillic.

Erotic Romance is not child pornography anymore than the website of a dentist or a canteen. Censorship of any kind always seems to err on the side of too much rather than too little. And the Austrialian Government seems to be blindly following that path. First, we censor sex, then we censor "radical politics," and then we become Nazi Germany or China.

If you wish to control what your children view on the internet, be a responsible parent and oversee their activity. If they can make a chip to censor the television for individual TV sets and home viewing, they can certainly do the same for the net. That would leave those of us who aren't so narrow minded to read what we wish and prevent the so called "morality police" from viewing anything they considered a threat to their establishment.

All of the authors and readers who frequent these blogs have a stake in this controversy. Those of us in the romance community respect the wishes of the blogs that restrict their postings to PG-13 only. Other sites that are ADULT sites, warn the viewer up front of what the site contains. We, the writers, label our posts accordingly. ADULT, PG-13, R, borrowing from the Hollywood rating system which has worked quite well on a voluntary basis for years.

I don't think that the United States is about to go the route of internet censorship, however, it is a slippery slope in which every author has a stake. If your publisher publishes anything other than PG-13 novels, there would exist a chance that the site could be banned in Australia. This will cut into your revenues as writers and publishers and drive up the cost per unit for readers.

So, tell me -- is this our fight, it damn well is because the following promo would probably be banned under the Australian internet laws!

Conflict -- A Moral Dilemma

The Sarran Planet
The story for The Sarran Plague evolved from a proverb which I paraphrase here, The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Conflict is the key element of a good novel. The type of conflict I chose was a moral dilemma.
All of the known humanoid races in the Milky Way Galaxy mate in pairs Sarran biology, although humanoid in origin, either mutated or was manipulated in the distant past to create mating triads consisting of a WarriorPair and their fem. (Information on how this came about can be found on my website www.ackatt.com).

Triad, for the Sarrans is a sacred rite blessed by their Goddess. It is also a biological necessity. Sarran reproduction requires sperm from two males and the egg of one female to form a fetus. Thus, each child is genetically related to all three caregivers.

A Triad begins with the formation of a PairBond. Sometime after puberty a Sarran Warrior will feel an irresistible attraction, a BondStir to another warrior. A psychic connection is formed. As the two fall deeper in love, their connection becomes stronger until they can no longer bear to be apart. A PairBond is formed. The bond crosses class and clan holding only one condition, as long as their are clans on Sarran, a pair can not be formed within a clan.

Once the PairBond is formed, they begin to seek the third, their fem. The fem is found by a joint psychic search conducted by the Pair. When the Pair find their fem and participate in the joining ceremony, the Triad is formed.

The Zyptz (Plague) virus targeted the mitochondrial DNA of the Sarran fems. All of the fertile Sarran fems sickened and died. Without the fems, the Sarrans faced genocide. Genetic testing proved Sarran DNA to be closest to that of the first humanoids to roam the stars. These were the humans that seeded the planets to hold future life. The Sarrans needed a fem population with a pure strain of mitochondrial DNA to be able to mate, the kind found only on primitive planets.

It was against the Sarran Codex to approach a civilization that had not reached space. That made the search difficult. Yet the Elders found a small blue planet in an obscure section of the Milky Way that had made it to their moon and were planning a mission to the next semi-habitable planet in their solar system where the fems would be with a minor chemical alteration, compatible. The inhabitants called it Earth. Yet here lie the moral dilemma.

It was inevitable that the Zyptz find Earth on their own. The Zyptz did not try to conquer Earth, instead, they dumped a new batch of plague over the new blue planet. Do the Sarran demand payment for their help? Do they ask for the fems? Does Washington agree? Will they be allowed to present their case to the American Women for the women to decide? Here is the tense scene just before Jonal and Tonas get some answers.

The only reason the Earthlings had not tried to knock them from the skies, not that they could with their primitive weaponry, was the antidote and vaccine that had been supplied on first contact to the most powerful and prosperous of the Earthen nation states. They were in this leader’s White House to use at his discretion. It had worked on test subjects. Now Tonas and Jonal danced the delicate minuet of negotiation.

The Leader needed the vaccine and antidote to save his population. He and his advisers also wanted advantage to maintain their country’s position as top predator in their violent world, a world the Leader was working to change. Tonas and Jonal bargained for the survival of their own race. The Sarrans had the vaccine, the antidote, and the technology for FTLS (faster than light speed) travel. The Admirals held the winning hand, but it was necessary to play the game to the end. They tensed, anticipating the response to their last offer. The problematic issue was the trade off. Some of the Earthen fems had already unknowingly been BondStirred by Sarran WarriorPairs. It was not something the Sarrans planned, it just happened. One of the pairs affected were the Admirals. The Alliance Scientists were correct. The Earthen fems were a match for the Sarrans. However, joy was short-lived for Tonas and Jonal, their connection to their fem told them she was dying. With heavy hearts, Tonas and Jonal asked to make their plea in person and planet-wide.

The White House Leader insisted on secrecy. He was afraid that his people would react with fear and violence. The Americans explained that a Triad in their culture was both a homosexual and polygamous liaison These types of liaisons were considered indecent and immoral on most of the planet. Some of the population, the Leader explained, would react as if the women were being sold into slavery.

The Sarrans were in shock. The Sarran fem was given every care. She was the center of her Bond Pair’s universe, they explained. But on this issue, the Americans would not budge. American was the only big nation on the planet Earth still in control after the plague hit. Smaller nation states were still in control of their populace, according to Sarran reports from the ground, but with the smaller populations, the fems taken would be missed.

Jonal ran his fingers through his hair...
That touch (Anya's) on his mind had awakened him from robotic state he had assumed since the Ipz. He burned with returning hope, flinging back and forth through the talks from despair to hope again. He now knew the elders were wrong, the Earthen fems could Bond. As he paced the room along the star table, the tic in his jaw throbbed, stretching the line of a thin scar down the right side of his face...

“Tonas, don't they understand their fems and their planet are doomed unless they take what we offer? Don’t they care about their people or ours?” Jonal shouted to the blond giant, banging the table for emphasis. He turned, looking at his Bonded, tears gathering at the corners of his eyes. “How do you negotiate terms for what is given away?”

“Our Elders sprung to ill-founded conclusions, Tonas.” Jonal brushed his hair back from his face. His intense frustration was evident in his clenched jaw teeth.

"They had insufficient data to make a sound working theory," Tonas explained.

Jonal shouted, “Our fem endures, suffering, below our boots. The longer we linger over this continent, the more intense the song that stirs our Bond. Anya is ours. We recognize her as ours. The Bond summons. Primitive or not, when our fem needs, we provide.” Jonal's emotional anguish had merged with the siren song of fem to WarriorPair. His organ pressed against the fine leather of his flightsuit. For the first time in three cycles, passion flamed. He swayed from lust to intense pain. “The sewer sucker below negotiates duplicity while sentient life lies in misery.”

Who holds the high moral ground in a dilemna such as the one presented to both the Sarrans and the President of the United States. Who is in the right?

That's the problem with a moral dilemna, both sides have right on their side. The Sarrans have just saved Earth and now they look to save themselves. Earth doesn't know if they can pay the price asked because of how it would look to the populace? What did they do? Find out in The Sarran Plague.

The Sarran Plague...The War in Space

In my novel, The Sarran Plague, Americans go on and about their daily lives while being in the midst of an alien act of biological terrorism. Nothing ever bothers a New Yorker. He or she is blase about life, been there, done that, made the move and the sequel but didn't sign up for the series. Therefore, a little bit of greenish oil mist was an annoyance, nothing more. A brief glimpse intto the beginning...

Fireworks filled the night sky across the United States of America. It was Independence Day. Aerial shells burst, scattering shooting stars in red, then white and blue. Layer cakes, combinations of sandwiched shells, sent up a rainbow of colors to burst in the sky. Peonies, threaded stars of fire; and chrysanthemums, peonies with tails and willows, lit the night sky. Roman candles sent up arcs of shooting stars. There were waterfalls, fountains, and specials designed to imitate the planets of the solar system. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn exploded into the sky. The finale was Blue Earth—triple rocket fountains surrounded the rotating sphere highlighting this year's theme of environmental awareness.

Celebrants spotted a magnificent explosion in the upper atmosphere. They looked up at the fiery disk. It was a show-stopping display. Everyone agreed that green mist was an apropos finale, until, that is, they noticed it became a slimy oil-like substance on their skin. Breaking news headlines streamed across CNN. Banners shrieked from print. Talk shows spoke slime 24/7. Environmental groups expressed outrage. The EPA investigated, and Congress planned hearings. The executive branch had no comment.

It was a two-day media fest. Then the NYPD nabbed a serial killer on July 6th. . Someone leaked photos of twenty-six naked women stacked like cord wood in a New York City townhouse basement. The killer was a local politico with DC connections. Some of the women were prominent socialites. The arresting officers appeared on all the morning shows. One network producer threw together a special series on American serial killers. Green slime slipped off the national radar screen, and America went back to business as usual.

Individuals in the three lettered agencies noted the official non-response. Information was on a need-to-know basis. It seemed no one needed to know. The rather curious story should have had longer legs. No UFO claims, no conspiracy theories, nothing on the airwaves. The guys in intelligence were very nervous. Analysts were information junkies. There was no information outside of the initial reports. In the aftermath the dots connected. By July 7th, the agencies still awaited the second shoe. It had to drop; it was a matter of when. As usual, the public had no clue.

The first cases hit the hospitals the evening of the seventh. The virus took forty-eight hours to incubate. Another twenty-four passed before full onset of symptoms. On July 7th, at 21:00 hours, hospitals became holding facilities. On July 21, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta provided the media with maps of the infected areas. Every state reported Plague, even Alaska and Hawaii. There was no time progression. No sunburst pattern to suggest an initial area of contamination. No case zero. It started everywhere, at once. No one asked questions. They were too busy trying to survive. Reports from CNN showed the rest of the planet in the same condition. No outside help was available to anyone. Everyone tried to save their own.

By the end of six weeks, fifty percent of the female population was infected. The CDC named it mixed immune response syndrome. The public called it the Plague. It was a virus, and symptoms varied. All known autoimmune diseases combined in strange variations. Lupus, multiple s, muscular dystrophy, mixed connective tissue disease, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and diabetes marched in terrible lock step. The possible combinations were mind-boggling. The victims were all female.

The National Institutes of Health compiled statistics that linked Plague to ovulation. It ignored prepubescent, post menopausal and sterile women and struck only the fertile. Someone had manufactured the Plague. It underwent constant mutation. There was no apparent cure or treatment. Both NIH and CDC worked round the clock. Symptoms worsened as ovulation neared. Episodes, called flares, brought new symptoms, more pain. Each flare brought a patient closer to the brink. Women begged for death, which seemed, in some cases, preferable. The cycle worked rapidly in some, from health to near death, four risings from exposure.

As women dropped dead, hospitals became understaffed. If there was a tech to take blood, there was no one to test it. Hospital labs ran with one or two male techs. Nurses came out of retirement. Governors mobilized the National Guard. The White House called in the Army and the Army Reserve. The federal government drafted all single men. Medical facilities returned women to their husbands or families for palliative care. Divorced men returned home to tend children. Patients with no family waited to die in medical facilities with little staff to treat them....

A Work In Progress, Shattered Glass

In my novel, Shattered Glass, the first quarter of the story is told in flashback. Lovers Milo and Liam were the the hottest front men in Rock; Milo, the golden Greek god and Liam the Black Irish devil. They smouldered on stage and off. Liam fell in love with Milo when he was twelve. Milo loved Liam for almost as long. Yet Milo waited until Liam attained his majority to make him his. The happiness was unending, until someone tore them apart. Forced back into Milo's life by circumstance, Liam sits in the guest room, listening to the first music he and Milo wrote together. Here is the excerpt...

Liam crossed over to the shelves and picked out a vinyl copy of the band’s first hit album. Liam stood, holding the jacket as he traveled back in time. Shattered Glass was their first album. He and Milo, more so than the others, drank, ate, and slept to the sound of this music. They had sweated over every song. Liam thought they should use all new material, but Milo insisted that they include one of their signature songs, Liam’s arrangement of Total Eclipse of the Heart. The song had brought the audience to its feet during their one tour with the failed band. Liam acquiesced, and he spent his seventeenth birthday in the recording studio, alone with Milo laying tracks for that arrangement. Looking back, it was an appropriate place to be. The song had been his gift to Milo on Milo’s seventeenth birthday, and recording it for their first album was almost as if Milo returned the gift to him.

The album made platinum on the day of his eighteenth birthday, the same day he received the letter from Lily. That night they played New York at Madison Square Garden for the first time.

Liam examined the stereo system. He turned it on and adjusted the controls to mimic those in the studio where they first recorded the song. He placed the record on the turntable, taking care not to mar the surface with either a fingerprint or a careless scratch. Then he lifted the arm, cued it to the first track, and pushed play. Although he had the sound turned low, the room hummed with the music. Liam sat in the soft leather recliner that was placed by the mountainside windows, closed his eyes, and listened

It was all coming back to him. The ride home from his on-stage birthday bash was electric. Sexual tension vibrated between the two of them. Milo leaned forward and closed the partition between them and limo driver.

“Liam, you know that as of this morning, you no longer have any obligation to me, the band, or even the record company. Anything I signed in your name, now that you have reached legal adulthood, you can fight in court. I wouldn’t oppose your wishes. You could go to college, even to Julliard, and perfect your craft. You have a genius for music, Liam. Someday you might want more for yourself than the life of a singer in a rock band. You don’t have to tie yourself to me out of any kind of misplaced gratitude. I did what I did because I wanted to.”

Liam smiled at Milo and caressed his cheek and hair in a way he hadn’t dared to since he was eleven. “What if that is what I want to do, Milo? What if all I want is you?” Liam’s eyes were shut tight against the torrent of tears brought on by those fateful words he’d whispered thirteen years ago. What if all I want is you? Those seven words had wrecked lives—his, Milo’s, Sam’s, and even in some small manner, Bart’s. Those seven words brought simultaneously his ascent into heaven and the inevitable plunge into hell. The music washed over him, as did his tears. He thought he had none left. Yet, seeing Milo again after six long years brought him joy, tempered by great pain, because he knew that this could all have been theirs, and he had blown it.
